“When should we do this?” is one of the most common questions we get on trimming estimates. The honest answer: for most work, the tree cares less than people think — but there are better and worse windows, and a couple of situations where timing really matters.
Late winter is the classic window
February and March, while trees are dormant, is the traditional time for structural pruning. The branch pattern is easy to see without leaves, the ground is often firm enough for equipment, and the tree puts its spring energy into healing the cuts. If you’re planning shaping work and there’s no urgency, this is a good slot to aim for.
Summer works fine for most trimming
Clearing limbs off a roofline, raising a canopy over a driveway, taking weight off a long limb — this kind of maintenance trimming is done all season long. If a branch is rubbing the shingles in July, there’s no reason to stare at it until winter.
When timing actually matters
- Oaks: pruning cuts in the growing season can attract the beetles that spread oak wilt. Oak pruning is best kept to the dormant months.
- Heavy bloomers: trim spring-flowering trees right after they bloom if you care about next year’s flowers.
- Storm season prep: the time to take weight out of a suspect limb is before the ice storm, not after. In Lake County that means getting it handled by late fall.
Broken and hanging limbs: the timing is now
A cracked limb hanging over the house doesn’t get a season. It gets heavier every time it rains, and it comes down when it wants to. That’s not a scheduling question — call it in and we’ll get it off the house so you can stop parking on the street.
What about the trees you can’t reach?
