Nobody calls a tree service because they feel like it. Usually there’s a tree that’s been bothering them for a season or two, and the real question is whether it’s actually a problem or just ugly. Here are the signs we take seriously when we walk a property.
1. Dead wood in the crown
Bare branches in summer, bark falling away in sheets, woodpecker holes everywhere — a tree that’s dying works from the top down. Dead limbs are brittle, and they don’t wait for a storm to let go. A few dead branches can sometimes be pruned out; a mostly dead crown usually means the tree is done.
2. Fungus at the base
Mushrooms or shelf fungus growing from the trunk or the root flare are a sign of decay inside the wood, where you can’t see it. The trunk can look solid and still be hollowing out. This one is worth a professional look, because the tree’s strength is exactly what’s in question.
3. A new lean
Plenty of healthy trees lean — they’ve grown that way for decades. The one to worry about is the lean that wasn’t there last year, or soil lifting and cracking on the side away from the lean. That can mean the roots are letting go, and Northeast Ohio’s wet springs and lake-effect winters do the rest.
4. Cracks and included bark
A vertical crack in the trunk, or a tight V-shaped fork where two trunks press against each other, are structural weak points. Under snow load or wind, that’s where trees split.
5. Root damage from construction
If a driveway, addition or utility trench went in near the tree in the last few years and the tree has been thinning since, the roots likely took a hit. Trees can take years to show it.
6. The target underneath
Finally, the honest question: what does it hit if it fails? A declining tree over an open back field can often be left alone. The same tree over a bedroom, a driveway or a neighbour’s garage is a different conversation.
