Can you remove trees in winter? What to expect in Northeast Ohio

Tree work doesn't stop when the leaves drop or the ground freezes. Here's what changes in winter, what doesn't, and why late fall through winter can be a good time to deal with a problem tree in Lake County.

A lot of homeowners assume tree work waits until spring. It doesn’t. Winter is when many trees finally show what’s wrong with them, and it’s often a perfectly good time to deal with them. Here’s what changes in winter, what doesn’t, and how to think about timing for a tree in Painesville, Lake County or elsewhere in Northeast Ohio.

What winter makes easier

  • You can see the tree. With the leaves gone, dead limbs, cracks, cavities and weak forks are much easier to spot, from the ground and from the bucket.
  • Less to haul. A bare tree has far less brush than the same tree in full leaf, which makes cutting, chipping and cleanup quicker.
  • Gentler on the property. Frozen ground holds equipment better, and we put ground protection mats under the outriggers and tracks regardless of the season.
  • Dormant trees are good candidates for trimming. Late winter is a common time to prune; we cover it in when to trim trees in Northeast Ohio.

What winter makes harder

Snow, ice and wind can limit when a job is safe to run, and a crane or lift won’t go up in conditions that aren’t safe. Heavy snow or ice on a tree adds weight and makes limbs less predictable. We’ll tell you when a day has to move. If a tree is already down or hanging after a storm, that’s a different case: we run 24/7 emergency service, and this guide covers what to do first.

Which jobs make sense in winter

  • Dead or declining trees, especially over a house, garage or driveway. Don’t leave them to the next ice storm. See how to tell if a tree is dead or dormant.
  • Trees with obvious defects that you can now see clearly: splits, cavities, a lean, broken limbs caught in the canopy.
  • Trees you were already planning to remove, so the space is clear for spring. If the stump is going too, stump grinding can be added to the visit.
  • Pruning of healthy trees you want to keep in good shape.

Booking before the rush

After a big storm everyone calls at once. Getting a problem tree looked at now, before the next one, means you’re choosing a time instead of reacting to an emergency. The estimate is free, we’re insured and bonded, and you don’t need to be home. See how to get your trees ready for storm season and what affects the cost of tree removal.

We cover Lake County and the surrounding Northeast Ohio counties: check our service area, request a free estimate, or call 440-901-8427. For trees over structures, our crane service lifts each section away instead of dropping it.
